Short Note Surface-Wave Green’s Tensors in the Near Field

چکیده
We demonstrate the connection between theoretical expressions for the correlation of ambient noise Rayleigh and Love waves and the exact surface-wave Green’s tensors for a point force. The surface-wave Green’s tensors are well known in the far-field limit. On the other hand, the imaginary part of the exact Green’s tensors, including near-field effects, arises in correlation techniques such as the spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) method. Using the imaginary part of the exact Green’s tensors from the SPAC method, we find the associated real part using the Kramers–Kronig relations. The application of the Kramers–Kronig relations is not straightforward, however, because the causality properties of the different tensor components vary. In addition to the Green’s tensors for a point force, we also derive expressions for a general point moment tensor source. Introduction Recently, Haney et al. (2012) extended the spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) method of Aki (1957) to the full tensor of possible three-component correlations, including correlations of mixed components. Short Note Green’s Functions for Surface Waves in a Generic Velocity Structure
Methodologies for calculating surface-wave velocities and the associated displacement/stress eigenfunctions and Green’s functions have been well established for many decades. However, to our knowledge, no one has ever documented a quantitative evaluation of these properties for commonly used empirical scalings. For example, it is currently not possible to take a given power-law dependence of sh...
متن کاملShort Note An Improved Method to Extract Very-Broadband Empirical Green’s Functions from Ambient Seismic Noise
The extraction of Green’s functions by cross correlation of continuous seismic records at station pairs is best achieved in a diffuse wave field, where energies radiated by random sources have equal power. To partially satisfy the diffuse wave-field condition, original seismic records must be normalized as they are highly nonstationary and may have amplitude variations of orders of magnitude wi...
متن کاملElectromagnetic wave propagation in media with indefinite permittivity and permeability tensors.
We study the behavior of wave propagation in materials for which not all of the principal elements of the permeability and permittivity tensors have the same sign. We find that a wide variety of effects can be realized in such media, including negative refraction, near-field focusing, and high impedance surface reflection. In particular, a bilayer of these materials can transfer a field distrib...
متن کاملTE and TM Green’s Function for Coherent and Incoherent Propagation over a Finitely Conducting Rough Surface
This paper presents wave propagation over a finitely conducting half-space whose surface is bounded by a rough surface of small rms height. An electric or magnetic current source is used to excite the rough surface and the Green’s function for TE and TM wave propagation is obtained. The appearance of roughness at the boundary produces both a coherent (mean) and incoherent (fluctuating) field di...
متن کاملDesign Spectrum for Near Fault Ground Motions Considering Frequency-Dependence of CH/SC Material Behavior Regarding Laboratory and Field Shear Wave Velocity (Vs)
Introduction One-dimensional site response analysis is widely performed to account for local site effects during an earthquake. Most of these approaches assume that dynamic soil properties are frequency independent. Laboratory test results as well as in-situ testing show that shear modulus and damping ratio are dependent on the frequency of loading. Although the amplification factor at ground ...
